Husky's priority is the safety of the public and its employees and contractors, and the protection of the environment.
Husky focuses on operational integrity and process safety to protect the public, minimize any impact to the environment, safeguard the health and wellbeing of employees, contractors, and customers, and protect physical assets (such as facilities and equipment) from damage or loss.
- Equipment and facilities are designed, constructed, instrumented and operated to reduce hazards to as low as reasonably practicable
- Procedures are developed, implemented and continually updated so that safe work practices are followed
- Workers are trained, coached and supervised; and personal protective equipment is always worn
To further protect workers and manage risk, the Company requires its workforce to have appropriate qualifications, competencies and training. Husky has developed an on-line safety orientation for staff and contractors to deliver information needed before arriving at a work site.

With a goal of no incidents, Husky analyzes and reports all events, the corrective actions taken, and then shares what is learned to help anticipate and prevent future occurrences. The root cause of an incident is extensively investigated and Husky fully supports any regulator-led investigation that may be warranted.
Husky tracks and measures its safety performance as part of its risk management strategy, adopting metrics that measure and continuously improve performance. These include measurements of performance before a loss occurs, such as the number of inspections, audits and proactive measures executed at the field level. The number of events that involve a loss, such as lost time incidents (LTIs) and the total recordable injury rate (TRIR) are also tracked.
Husky Operational Integrity Management System
The Husky Operational Integrity Management System (HOIMS) is a set of interrelated policies, aims, expectations and processes. These 14 elements guide Husky's safe and reliable operations. HOIMS applies a specific aim and a clear set of expectations to each element to continuously improve Husky's process safety and operational integrity.
The HOIMS elements are:
- Accountability - All personnel demonstrate accountability for operational integrity.
- Occupational Health & Safety - Health and safety risks are effectively managed.
- Risk Management - All hazards are identified, analyzed, and evaluated and associated risks are managed.
- Emergency Management - Emergency response, business continuity, and security programs are implemented. Husky is prepared to manage an emergency, business interruption, or security event.
- Reliability & Integrity - Manage equipment and controls that are essential to reliability and integrity.
- Training & Competency - Personnel are trained and competent to perform their role responsibilities.
- Incident Management - Investigate and learn from incidents to improve operational integrity performance.

- Management of Change - Permanent, temporary, and emergency changes that impact operational integrity, and the risks associated with those changes, are managed.

Emergency Preparedness and Response
Husky has a multi-level emergency response system to effectively respond to and manage incidents.
The Company conducts regular emergency preparedness exercises across all of its operations and participates in industry-wide initiatives. It reviews and updates its emergency plans on an ongoing basis.
Husky’s Corporate Emergency Response Plan governs its response to an emergency event, with individual emergency response plans in place for all Husky activities.
In addition to established procedures, training and regular exercises, effective communication with key stakeholders, including the public, governments, regulators, employees and families, media, contractors and partners is critical to a successful response.
Husky is a founding partner of the Alberta Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society (STARS) Emergency Contact Centre. After-hours emergency calls for the majority of its operations in Western Canada are routed through STARS, improving Husky’s ability to communicate with multiple responders and providing backup call centres.
The Company participates in the Conference Board of Canada’s Council on Emergency Management, which looks at opportunities to improve emergency management across Canada through research and networking.
